Topeka, Kansas, April 11, 2009—Heartland Park Topeka owner Raymond Irwin plans to open the new Saturday Night Showdown Stock Car Series Presented by the Kansas National Guard on April 18 with an entertaining evening sure to surprise even the region’s most loyal racing fans.

В

“Expect the unexpected,” says Irwin. “Our Opening Night and new Saturday night schedule will be down-and-dirty racing, a welcome break from your ordinary weekend entertainment options. We’ve got a new management team that lives and breathes motorsports, and a new night to watch the racing Heroes @ Heartland all summer long.”

В

Irwin also has made sure that no one skips the activities at the revamped HPT.com Speedway because of the cost of admission. All Saturday Night Showdown Stock Car Series tickets, including Opening Night April 18, cost only $8 for adults, $2 for youths ages 12 and under. For more information, go to www.HPT.com.

В

“Moving our weekly oval track racing from Sunday to Saturday nights this season, with a low cost of admission given the economic downturn, was the direct result of talking and listening to our fans and drivers,” says Heartland Park Topeka Chairman Steve Johnson. “They felt Saturday was the perfect night for Heartland Park to host this exciting form of racing, when fans can come enjoy the electric atmosphere around the HPT.com Speedway with friends and family.”

В

Johnson also feels the Kansas National Guard is the perfect sponsor for the series, given the Heroes @ Heartland theme for the season. “The sacrifices that members of the military make for our country on a daily basis are the true measure of heroes in our eyes,” Johnson says.

В

Hot Laps start at 6:15 p.m., followed by the special Opening Night festivities at 7 p.m. on April 18. Heartland Park Topeka Saturday Night Showdown Stock Car Series racing this season will feature four classes: Hobby Stocks, Factory Stocks, Champ Modified and A-Modifieds.

В

The Super 8 at Forbes Landing is the class sponsor of the Champ Modified Series; Sonic Drive-Ins are class sponsor of the Hobby Stock Series; and Berry Tractor is class sponsor of the A-Modified Series. BriggsAuto.com is the new 2009 Heartland Park Topeka facility sponsor.

В

Late last year, Johnson hired Alan Covert as HPT.com Speedway Manager to inject some added fun and professionalism into Heartland Park Topeka’s program. Covert’s roots in Midwest dirt track racing date back to 1940, when his grandfather first began building and racing jalopies at Kansas tracks.

В

“We’ve come a long way since then, with four classes including Modified cars that will reach 100 miles per hour on the straightaway before they’re forced to turn left in the dirt,” Covert says. “At its core, though, dirt stock car racing remains the same, with hard-nosed, fearless drivers pushing these cars to the limit on a tight, challenging track. You never know what’s going to happen week after week.”

В

Opening Night festivities on April 18 will include the finals of the Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby, where a local hero will be crowned champion. The Derby will be an element of the “Heroes @ Heartland” theme included in all the facility’s activities this season. There also will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a Topeka Chamber of Commerce gathering and a special rendition of the national anthem.

В

In March, Irwin announced the 2009 season and declared it the “best ever” in the facility’s 20-plus-year history. The 2009 schedule includes the always popular NHRA O’Reilly Summer Nationals to be held May 29-31, the region’s premier drag racing event, and the newest signature motorsports event in the lineup, the AMA Pro Racing motorcycle series to be held July 31-Aug. 2.
