SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: STEVEN BOWERS JR.

Topekan Steven Bowers Jr. can't be accused of racing on his laurels.

After dominating the Modified class in the 2010 Super Saturday Showdown Series, Bowers abandoned the two-car system that carried him to the track championship and started the current campaign with a brand new car.

"We had a pretty good season last year,'' Bowers said. "Hopefully this 2011 season goes just a little bit better.

"Our goal is to win every week. We don't come to take second.''

Bowers always had two race cars at the ready last season, an approach that paid big dividends. This year, however, Bowers trotted out a new car.

"I sold both of my cars last year and I built me a brand new car this year,'' he said. "It was helpful having two race cars ready to go, but financially we'd like to keep it down to one.''

Bowers' new car debuted with a win on opening night at Heartland Park and he thinks it has the potential to be better than last year's cars.

"It's supposed to be better, but we'll see how it is,'' Bowers said. "We'll see how it pans out. Hopefully we can start out this new season with a bang.''

After a hectic offseason getting everything prepared for 2011, Bowers was ready to get back to racing.

"Uusally the winter time's kind of stressful, getting stuff rounded up,'' he said. "For the most part summer time is kind of relaxing.

"You just go race your stuff and then you've got to get ready to build another new car next year.''
