SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: RANDY KOHN
Topeka racer Randy Kohn was sky-high after notching his first Pure Stock feature victory last Saturday night and he hasn't come down a whole lot since then.
"I was overwhelmed,'' Kohn said. "It was something that we've worked really hard for and things just kind of played out.
"Let's just say I still haven't slept good since that win. I'm still pretty excited about it.''
Kohn's breakthrough win came in only his second year of racing after moving from the grandstands to the track.
"When I first started out I just wanted to finish a race and actually even just finish a lap,’’ Kohn said. “Then, after you get the hang of it, you want to win one of those things.
"Growing up I always went to the dirt track races at Heartland Park and since I was a little kid I'd always wanted to race. It was just always one of my goals that I wanted to do in my life and I decided to give it a shot a couple of years ago.’’
Racing has been everything Kohn thought it could be.
"I've always said that once you're out there and in the car and get going it's a feeling that's indescribable,’’ Kohn said. “It's like no other (feeling).''
Kohn finished second in Hobby Stock points in his rookie campaign, but couldn't quite make it to victory lane.
"Last year was a good year, but this year's even better because all I wanted to do was win one and it happened pretty quick,'' Kohn said.
"I didn't expect it so soon because I know there's guys that have been racing a lot longer than me and have never won but it just kind of played out in my favor, the whole thing.''
Now that Kohn has won the next goal is obvious.
"Now that I've won one it would be nice to win a couple more.''
