Kirk Becomes The First Driver To Repeat In B Mods At HPT.Com Speedway
Topeka, KS - All good things must come to and end. Sales, winning streaks and movies are a few things that come to mind. Saturday night at HPT.Com Speedway the streak of different winners in the White Line CDL Training B Mod division came to an end. Dalton Kirk became the first repeat winner in the division with the feature win.
"You know it feels really good," said Kirk, "coming out here and winning it for the 2nd time it's real nice."
Dylan Whitehead jumped out to the early lead in the B Mod feature. Several drivers were up on the wheel jockeying for position. Kirk was one of those drivers trying to move up. Kirk started in the 3rd row, but quickly found himself in the 2nd spot.
It wouldn't be long before Kirk found himself at the front of the field. That is after a few yellows and a few restarts. Kirk would battle with Whitehead before taking the top spot. Once he got to the front, he protected his territory and went on to the win.
It took 6 races for the first repeat winner landed in victory lane. The competition in this class is getting more stiff each race night.
Bobby Penny would also get by Whitehead and take the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Whitehead, Mike Higley performed another one of his hard charges to the front again as he went from 11th to 4th and 5th went to John Grist.
Each week in the Casey's General Store Pure Stock class, it's a given that Zach Henrey is going to be at the front of the field. Tonight was no exception as Henrey passed Randy Kohn on a restart. What happened after that is what shocked the fans in attendance at the track.
Randy Kohn decided that 1 win on the season wasn't enough, Kohn needed another win to add to his resume.
As Henrey was sitting in the top spot, Kohn kept him within striking distance looking for a good spot to jump on him.
"It feels good, but I am more in a state of shock. Seeing that 97 car go by me, I thought there was no chance of me getting him," said Kohn, "I found a little something on the high side and was able to get a run on him... Boy! It feels good to get number 2."
Kohn, along with the stunned crowd, enjoyed the moment in the spotlight. As Kohn picked up his 2nd win in the Hobby Stocks, he was quick to credit and thank Zach Henrey for the advice he has been giving the driver.
Henrey finished 2nd, the points leader, AJ Christian, finished 3rd, 4th went to Darren Davenport and Rodney Walker rounded out the top 5.
For the 2nd straight week in the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stocks, Steve Herrick found himself in victory lane.
Unlike last week, there would be no ultimate battle to the flag stand. This week, he took over the lead, extended it and drove off to the win.
Dave Samuels, a 3 time winner this year, looked to challenge Herrick, but a flat tire would end his night.
"I was back there a little ways and I figured that I would hang out there on the outside for a little bit," said Herrick, "it was nice and smooth up there and I was just trying to be patient. I saw my move and I had to take her."
Herrick's repeat win wasn't as big of a shocker to the driver from Topeka. The win was more of a confidence booster. He had never won two races in a row before in his career and maybe now with 2 wins under his belt maybe he is looking at 3.
Zach Henrey finished 2nd, a hard-charging Gerald Wahwahsuck finished 3rd, Tyson young celebrated a strong run in 4th and dropping to 5th on the last corner from 2nd, was Matt Field, due to a mechanical problem.
It was also a repeat winner in the Washburn Tech Modified division. Steven Bowers Jr. would ride to the win. It was his 2nd win in a row and 3rd win on the season.
At the outset of the race, there was a massive push from the entire field to get to the front. Unfortunately, for some, it wasn't in the cards.
The top 5 cars at the end of the night started no better than 3rd row. It was a good run for most of the drivers in the top 10, but Bowers put together another unbeatable night.
Whitey Folk finished the race in 2nd, 3rd went to Kyle Covert, Josh Everhart battled all night long and finished 4th and the youngster from Emporia, Cody Agler, finished in the 5th position.
Six races are now complete and race number 7 comes up next week for the BriggsAuto.Com Super Saturday Showdown Series. To gather more information about the dirt track or Heartland Park in general, log on to www.hpt.com for more information.
