More New Faces Find Their Way Into Victory Lane.
By Jr. Lowrey
TOPEKA, KS (May 14) - Race car drivers seem to have a lot of firsts in their careers. Things like first time behind a car, first time working on my own car, etc. Tonight was one of those rare nights for Steven Goodman.
Goodman, came close to a win last season but he spun on the white flag lap. This year he wasn't about to let that happen again.
Goodman wrestled away the lead from Brian Murphy, the early leader of the feature event. Once at the front position, Goodman, decided to run away from the rest of the competition.
"It was a crazy race. Come clear from a scratch position in the heat race and that was an awesome run," said Goodman, "I put everything together and everything was just clicking."
Wrecks and yellows were flying crazy during the B Mod Feature. The positive that came from this negative, was the fact that mayhem kept happening around him but it wasn't collecting him up.
Goodman started out the night finishing 2nd in his heat race. It was a good finish considering he started scratch in the race. Once he got to the feature, it was time to let his brain do the talking. It worked well as you see the end result.
"This track has totaled one of my cars, blown one of my motors up and taking one of my trannys, so it feels great to finally get one up on it (the track)," said Goodman.
In the end it was Goodman who got the last word in on the track. It was smooth and had grip all night long.
Former track champion, Brian Murphy took home the 2nd place finish on the night, 3rd went to Mike Higley, 4th was Dalton Kirk and finishing 5th in the main event was, Jack Frost.
The Modified Feature ended with a lot of excitement, at least for Josh Everhart it ended with a lot of excitement.
Everhart has held together and turned in several great finishes in 2011. Saturday night at HPT.Com Speedway, it didn't take long for him to come out and show the fans of the sports world just how good he is by winning the Modified Feature event.
The feature in the Modifieds the previous two weeks have went to Steven Bowers Jr. Bowers had began to roll Everhart in as the race went on. By the time the last couple of laps were run, Bowers had found a little bit of bite up higher on the race track. Everhart decided to keep his car on the bottom. At the line it was a photo finish and after further review, the race stands as is with Everhart picking up the win.
"I looked over and he was sitting behind me," said Everhart, "the cars are identical and if he was behind me that must have meant that I won."
It was to close to call for many fans that were in attendance. It made for a fitting end to a long race night.
Bowers Jr. and Kerry Davis, both driving SB Chassis cars along with the winner, Everhart, finished 1, 2 and 3 on the track, Tom Grist took home the 4th spot and rounding out your top 5 was Cody Agler.
In the Factory Stock class, fans are begining to see just how fun this class can be. This week's race was a heartbreaker for one and the ultimate high for another.
David Samuels has hauled in 3 wins out of the 6 races that had been completed to date. It looked as if he would be walking away with a win. Unfortatunately, Samuels would cut a tire down after contact between he and Alfred Benson. The contact would cost Samuels as he would get a left rear flat. Instead of pulling out a yellow, Samuels pulled into the pits.
Matt Field took over the lead and put the hammer down as he went on to win the Factory Stock A Main. He joins Samuels, Steve Herrick and Gerald Wahwahsuck as feature winners.
A year ago Field, was tyring to get back into the groove of racing a car on a weekly basis. This season things are back to being 'old hat' for this excited driver.
Tyson Young celebrated an outstanding performance, coming in the runner-up spot, Gerald Wahwahsuck finished 3rd, 4th went to Zach Henrey and 5th was Steve Herrick.
The Pure Stock class has seen more than it's fair share of solid finishes in 2011.
Zach Henrey showed his prowess on the speedway for his 4th feature win of the season.
Henrey made solid laps in his car and drove past Randy Kohn for the win.
Randy Kohn, last week's feature winner, finished in the 2nd position, the points leader in the class, AJ Christian, also had a strong run and Christian is consistent, Jimmy Millard and Steve Stewart took the checkers together.
After the Hobby Stock race an engine claim was placed on the winning car of Henry's. The claim was agreed upon and now the claiming driver, Jimmy Millard, will have to race that motor in 2 weeks when they return to action. Keep an eye on this exciting class.
HPT.Com Speedway will be off next week, instead the racing will start again on May 21st. For more information log on to www.hpt.com
