Topeka dirt racer Steve Herrick knows he has a shot to win his first Heartland Park Topeka track championship this season.

But Herrick, currently leading the Factory Stock points chase in the Super Saturday Showdown Series, also knows that winning will be a tough task.

“There's a lot of fast race cars out here and the man to beat is Dave Samuels,'' said Herrick, who is coming off a feature win last Saturday night. “He's the champion of the track so everybody's chasing him.''

Herrick is trying to improve on last year's third-place points finish.

“We were pretty close,'' Herrick said. “I got off to a bad start.''

Herrick is off to a much better start in '11 and feels like he has put himself in position to challenge for the top spot.

“We got off to a good start this year and keep tweaking on it and want to see what we can do,'' he said.

Herrick said that the key will be to finish races.

“At the end of the night if you can put it on the trailer you're doing pretty good,'' he said.

Herrick said that Factory Stock class is an enjoyable division to race in.

“There's a lot of good drivers out here,'' he said. "Everybody gives each other room and there's a lot of respect among each other and it's a lot of fun.''

With that mind, Herrick has no immediate plans to step up in class.

“I want to stay here for right now,'' he said. "I want to win a championship for sure but I'm sure that everybody else does, too. We're chasing it and it will all pan out in the end.''
