SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: KERRY DAVIS
Kerry Davis has had a bunch of wins in his Modified career, which dates back to the late 1980s, but he also knows that it’s getting tougher and tougher to visit victory lane in a class that’s loaded with talent.
“The days of a race track where it was easy are gone,’’ Davis said. “There are 10 or 12 good cars every night, everywhere you go.’’
And even though the wins might be fewer and farther in between – last Saturday’s Super Saturday Showdown Series victory was his first of the season – he loves the competition.
“It makes you a better racer because you’re only as good as the people you race against,’’ said Davis, who lives in Parkville, Mo. “If you have better competition it makes you step up your game and makes you work harder and it gives you a better feeling of accomplishment when you actually get lucky enough to win one.’’
Davis felt that feeling of accomplishment when he ended a string of near-misses with last week’s Heartland Park victory.
“I was so excited Saturday night I forgot half my sponsors,’’ he said. “That’s unlike me, but I did. I think you appreciate the wins so much because they’re harder to come by. The amount of work that you put into them, it really is a sense of accomplishment when you finally get one.’’
Davis has to travel more than a hour to get to HPT and juggles his racing with a busy work and family life, but said he feels like the worries of the world are lifted when he climbs in his No. 68 car.
”All the hard work and effort everybody puts into it I’ve never understood how anybody could work on a race car and not be the one that races it because that’s all the joy,’’ he said. “I’m lucky enough that I’ve got a good crew behind me and a bunch of sponsors and I get to have all the fun racing the cars.’’
After a tough 2010 campaign, Davis, who races regularly at HPT and Lakeside Speedway, is having a lot more fun this season.
“We’ve run a ton of seconds and thirds,’’ Davis said. “(Saturday) was our first win, but I would say overall we’re doing very well. Last year we had a horrible year, probably one of the worst years I’ve ever had since I started racing. I was scared I was going to have another one but we’ve got the car going pretty good and I’ve got a buddy of mine, Randy O’Dell, helping me with the engines so we’ve had some pretty good success.
“We don’t have a lot of wins for it but we’ve had a lot of good runs.’’
