Topeka Modified racer Darron Fuqua is on a roll, and wants to ride the roll as long as possible.
The current points leader in the Super Saturday Showdown Series, Fuqua has a whopping six feature victories on the year after Saturday night’s win in the Steve Bowers Sr. Memorial.
“We’ve been doing real well,’’ Fuqua said. “In this class you’ve got to have the whole package.
“The motor runs real good -- we haven’t had any problems with it – the chassis’s been working great and I’ve been doing pretty good behind the wheel, I guess,’’ Fuqua said.
Before you can visit victory lane you must first finish the race and that’s been a major focus for Fuqua.
“Every week, Joe Campbell, the guy who helped build the car, says to be patient,’’ Fuqua said. “He says, “You’ve got the fastest car, you just need to be patient.’ I’ve been trying to do that the best that I can.
“I get a little impatient sometimes but I’ve just been trying to stick with that and pick them off when I can.’’
Fuqua was the HPT points runner-up last season and is shooting for his first title at the track this season.
“You just go out and try to do the best you can,’’ Fuqua said. “If you start points racing you start holding back and then you get in the middle of the field where you get beat and banged on.
“The best luck I’ve had is just going out and trying to win races.’’
Fuqua has won a bunch already this season, with four more wins than any other driver in the class, and realizes that that’s no easy feat in a talent-laden class.
“There’s a lot of fast cars,’’ Fuqua said. “There’s a handful of guys any night that can win and you can’t really under-estimate anybody.’’
