After being on the sidelines for about 15 years, Topekan Matt Field caught the racing bug again, and is glad he did.
In his first full season since his long hiatus from the sport, Field has already won twice this year in Heartland Park’s Super Saturday Showdown Series and is currently third in Factory Stock points.
“It’s really nice to get back in and have such a good year my second year back,’’ Field said. “We did race a limited season last year. I had bad luck and blew a motor, but we’re back strong this year.’’
“I didn’t know if we’d be able to make it work, but this is the same car I raced like 15 years ago and we got her back under control.’’
Field lost his desire to race in the mid-1990s but was eventually nudged back to the track by friends and family members.
“My dad passed away and (racing) kind of lost its fun for a little bit,’’ Field said. “My wife and my best friend said, “Well, your dad would want you back out there.’ I’m glad they told me that.
“He’s looking over me right now and helping me have a good time.’’
Field said he also appreciates being able to race so close to home.
“The facility here is just awesome, it really is,’’ Field said. “I ran other tracks back in the day and, I tell you, Heartland Park’s the way to go.’’
