Carbondale drag racer Richard Cantrell has raced for his entire adult life and has no plans to step away from the sport he loves.
“I probably started in high school when I was 18 or so,’’ said Cantrell, currently 10th in Super Pro points in Heartland Park’s E.T. Bracket Racing Series. “So it’s been about 30 years.’’
And long before he started racing, Cantrell was a fixture at area tracks.
“My dad was already racing back in the ‘50s or ‘60s so I just kind of hung around him and went to all the races,’’ Cantrell said. “I played with Hot Wheels on the trailer ramps and slept out there during the two-day races with a lot of the other kids who are adults now.
“I grew into it, literally from the ground up.’’
No surprise, Cantrell still feels his most comfortable when he’s at the track.
“You come out here and have fun,’’ he said. “A bad day racing’s better than a good day working, they say anyway, but you’ve got to work to play.
“It’s fun out here to see all your friends and all the people you’ve known and raced against for years. It’s fun to go out and do smoky burnouts and make noise and stuff, things you can’t do on the boulevard.’’
