SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: ZACHARY HENERY
Local dirt track racer Zachary Henery is enjoying the heck out of the 2011 Super Saturday Showdown Series season while also getting a head start on 2012.
Henery has dominated the Pure Stock class, holding an 89-point lead over Randy Kohn as the season winds down, and he sits a solid fourth in points in Factory Stock, 24 points out of third.
Henery’s goal now is to close out his Pure Stock season strong while continuing to establish himself as a Factory Stock contender.
“I’m happy with it,’’ Henery said of his efforts in Factory Stock. “It’s not where I want to be but that’s a good group of guys. There’s five, six, seven, eight, nine people that can win every night and we’re just hoping to be one of them here pretty soon.
“We’re getting the car close. Coming from a Pure Stock to a Factory Stock, it’s a big difference, so I’ve got to change my driving style. I think now I’m getting it. Hopefully before the year’s out we’ll get a win at least.’’
Henery plans to run exclusively in Factory Stock in 2012 but doubled up in Pure Stock this season with the goal of claiming his first track championship in that class.
He is very close to making that happen, with an amazing 13 feature wins to date.
“We’ve been having a good season,’’ Henery said. “I want to get a championship in Pure Stock and then we’re going to move on from that class and concentrate more on Factory Stock.’’
Yet another member of the Henery family may move into the Pure Stock entry after Zachary moves on.
“We’ve got a couple of prospects going on,’’ Henery said. “We don’t know who’s going to jump in yet, whether it’s going to be my brother-in-law or my little brother, but it will still be running.’’
And while Henery has enjoyed competing in two classes this season, he’s not necessarily going to miss the double duty.
“When it’s 110 (degrees) it’s hard on a big guy,’’ Henery said. “It will wear you out, but I enjoyed driving both of them.’’
