Championship Battles Move Into Final Round This Weekend At HPT.Com Speedway
Topeka, KS - If the BriggsAuto.Com Super Saturday Showdown Series was a prize fight, it would be heading into the final round beginning this Saturday night, Sept. 3.
For an entire season drivers in the Washburn Tech Modifieds, Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stocks, White Line CDL Training B Mods and the Casey's General Store Pure Stocks have been positioning themselves to be in a spot for the championship when the final few races roll in.
There is a lot that is on the line when it comes to a championship. Bragging rights is the first thing that comes to mind, but the second thing is money! It could be tough trying to figure an order of importance between the two. The heck with bragging rights, I want money. Champions of the BriggsAuto.Com Super Saturday Showdown Series will take home nice paychecks at the banquet.
In the Washburn Tech Modifieds the champion receives $2,000 top prize, $1,000 awaits the winner of the White Line CDL Training B Mods, $750 goes to the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stock champ and the Casey's General Store Pure Stock title winner will go away with $350!
Darron Fuqua clicked off 10 wins in the Modified division this season. His strong run has put him in the best position to win a championship, as he leads Josh Everhart, who is in 2nd place, by 101 points. Drivers who aren't in the championship chase will have one thing on their mind, WIN! It's a simple formula and two week's ago, Justin Johnson did just that. It's possible you will see another new face in victory lane as drivers will go for broke down the stretch.
Another battle that seems to be heavily favored is in the Casey's General Store Pure Stocks. Zach Henery has notched 13 wins on the season and he has built up an 89 point lead. Henery's goal has been the same since the beginning of the season; win a championship. Henery didn't come into the season saying that he wanted the most wins, he wants a championship. As 4 races remain, it looks like Henery's championship dreams could be right around the corner.
Now with those two classes out of the way, there are still two classes that can have two drivers slugging it out to the final bell. The White Line CDL Training B Mods has the closest battle with young Dalton Kirk leading Mike Higley by just 8 points. This could be the most exciting battle of the year, but there is now a twist in the mix.
This past week HPT officials announced that the race that was postponed from the water main break would be made up on Sept. 10. Higley has already committed to another race in another state on that night. If he were to miss one of the final 4 races, Higley would be conceding the championship to Kirk. The twist is that Higley might not qualify for the feature event on Saturday night, the 10th. If he doesn't qualify for the feature, he could return to HPT.Com Speedway and the battle would be back on. Time will tell all.
Steve Herrick and Dave Samuels are separated by 12 points as of this moment. It should be fitting that these two will knock heads to the final race. Both of these drivers went toe to toe on night number 1, they have amassed the most wins in the class this season and they each know what it will take to win a championship. All season long the Factory Stock class has put on a great show and now with this points battle reaching it's boiling point and the car count keeps rising this is going to be a fun one to watch.
This Saturday will mark a return to normal start times at HPT.Com Speedway. The spectator gates will open up at 5:30 p.m., hot laps will be at 6:15 p.m. and the racing goes green at 7:00 p.m.
Adult tickets are $10 and kids 12 and under will be just $5.
