Driskell, Samuels, Goodman & Henery Land In Winner's Circle; Fuqua & Henery Secure Championships
Topeka, KS - Saturday night's race was to set the table for next week's championship night at HPT.Com Speedway. After the races were complemented two track champions were declared and two more might have put their stamp on a championship.
Darron Fuqua left Saturday night with a 105 point lead in the Washburn Tech Modified division. The maximum point total any one driver can earn on a given night is 50 points. With only one race left nobody can pass Fuqua. This is Fuqua's first championship at HPT.Com Speedway.
In the Washburn Tech Modified division we have been seeing a youth movement over the last few races. Justin Johnson got his 1st career win just a couple of weeks back and last night, Luke Driskell, another young ace, picked up his 1st win at HPT.Com Speedway.
Driskell isn't a normal weekly competitor at the track. It was a bit of irony as he started 6th in his heat race and the feature event. He knew that he had a fast car. In his heat race he would finish 2nd, but he had to make up a lot of ground in a short amount of time. He thought if he had some extra laps (25) he could get his GRT by Phillips to the front of the field.
It wasn't an easy task getting into the lead. He had to pick drivers off one at a time. While he was doing this, Justin Johnson was putting some distance on the field up front. Driskell continued to knock off more positions he found himself in 2nd. He would run his race and line and it wouldn't let him down.
Working his way to the back bumper of Johnson, Driskell would drive by him just like he had done all the other competitors while taking the lead. Driskell would continue his march to the checkers without missing a beat.
Everhart would finish 2nd, the 2011 Modified Track Champion Fuqua would finish 3rd, Tom Grist started 16th and drove all the way up to finish 4th and last week's winner, Kerry Davis, rounded out the top 5 in 5th.
Zach Henery also left Saturday night with a triple digit lead (113) and a points championship. What he did that Fuqua didn't' do was Henery picked up his 16th feature win of the season in the Casey's General Store Pure Stock class.
Henery started on the pole position for the feature and just like he has done all season he sprinted out to a big lead. From there it was just a formality.
Sixteen wins in a single season has never been accomplished by any driver in any division at HPT.Com Speedway. Henery still has 1 race left to go, which means that 17 is still in the cards!
Behind Henery the race was tight. The racing action was two and three wide at times. AJ Christian fell back after being up front and then battled his way back to a runner-up finish. Jimmy Millard had a strong run finishing in 3rd, 4th went to Randy Kohn and rounding out the top 5 was Darren Davenport.
All season long it's been said the the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stocks put on some of the best races at the track. Saturday's race was a barn burner!
Coming into the night all the eyes were, again, on Dave Samuels and Steven Herrick. The same attention that was shown last week and for the 2nd straight week it didn't bother Gerald Wahwahsuck.
Wahwahsuck had his 3 wheeling factory stock out in front of the field most of the night for the 2nd straight week. Steve Herrick took the lead away for 1 lap during the main event, but Wahwahsuck would retake the lead on the very next lap.
Herrick and Samuels moved in the 2nd and 3rd spots on the speedway and battle for most of the night. This is just about where the excitement begins.
Samuels made a charge to get around Herrick and closed up on Wahwahsuck. Coming to the white flag it appeared that Wahwahsuck's 3 wheeling could have taken a toll on his ride. The left front suspension on his car would give up on the final lap. Samuels would scoot by him and take his 11th win of the season.
Wahwahsuck would do an impressive job limping his car to a runner up finish, 3rd went to Steve Herrick, Henery Mabe finished a close 4th and Zach Henery racked up another top 5 finish in 5th.
Next week's point championship in the Factory Stocks will be a tough battle if Herrick is going to win. Samuels extended his lead to 25 points over Herrick by the end of the night.
In the Whiteline CDL Training B Mod division it was another familiar face, Steven Goodman, finding his way back into victory lane.
As has been the case for most of the year it was a wild and crazy event for the B Mods. Last week's winner, Dylan Whitehead, had a strong night going in his favor.
Whitehead was blistering fast all night long from the heats to the feature, unfortunately for him, while leading he would lose a left rear spring on the car and it would take him out of the race.
Richard Prochnow would take the lead next, but it would be Goodman that found his to the front. Goodman ran good, consistent laps and it would keep him out front for the rest of the night.
Goodman would have to earn his victory as the runner-up of Lucas Isaacs made several challenges on Goodman at the front of the field. Isaacs just couldn't get the job done and Goodman would take the checkered flag for the 2nd time this season.
Third went to another Isaacs, Ethan. He would start 14th in the A Main and jump all the way to the 3rd by the end of the night, Prochnow finished 4th and Tracy Schaefer turned in his best race of the season finishing in 5th.
The points battle in this division appears to be over after last night too. Dalton Kirk had another off night, but his closest competition, MIke Higley, appears to be done for the season and that would hand the championship over to Kirk. Kirk has a 37 point lead with 1 race left.
Even thought HPT.Com Speedway has crowned a couple of champions for 2011, don't think for a minute that their won't be excitement next weekend. Byron and Sandy Glotzbach are feeling very generous and they are in a celebratory mood. Sandy has been been battling and has beaten cancer (and she will be beating it again!) and they are looking for a new and exciting way to celebrate their wedding anniversary. How about adding $2,000 to the purse next week!?
That's right the Glotzbach's have put a big hunk of change into next week's races. The Modified winner will take home $1,500 bucks, $750 goes to the Factory Stock winner, the B Mod winner will take in $700 and the Pure Stock winner will inherit $225!
With this kind of bonus on the line, it will ensure that the action will continue once again at HPT.Com Speedway.
Spectator gates will open at 5:30 p.m., hot laps are scheduled for 6:15 p.m. and the racing action starts at 7:00 p.m.
Adult tickets are $10 and kids get in for $5.
