Kyle Covert is off to a tough start in the 2012 Super Saturday Showdown dirt track series at Heartland Park Topeka.

Covert's Modified had problems before he took the first green flag of the season. Then, after getting things fixed, Covert made the "A' main feature and was running well last Saturday night before more problems resulted in a 15th-place finish.

But there are also a couple of pieces of good news for the young Topeka driver, who currently sits 24th in points.

First of all, there is plenty of racing left to make up ground.

Secondly, the Shawnee Heights graduate proved last season that when his car is right he can be a factor in the talent-heavy Modified class.

"We got our first win in the Modifieds last year and did not pretty good things last year,'' said Covert, who finished sixth in the point standings a year ago. "We had quite a few top-fives.''

The plan this season is to continue to race at HPT while also hitting other area tracks as time allows.

"We're going to race here and then see wherever the season takes us,'' Covert said.

And though he's still one of the youngsters in his class, Covert, a former Factory Stock champ, has three years of Modified experience under his belt.

"We're getting more and more every time we're out on the track, just learning every time we're out there,'' Covert said.
