Super 8 @ Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown Week #2

Week #2 at the Super 8 @ Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown featured two repeat winners, a two time track champion winning, and a feature race that was decided in the final turn. “Track Prep is great! A smooth slick surface, this is what I like!” was echoed by may of the racers. With 88 racers in 4 divisions, it was another exciting Saturday night at the Speedway.

In the Washburn Tech A-Modified division it was 2-time track Champion Darron Fuqua taking the checkered flag. Fuqua, who didn’t race last week at Speedway, started at the front of the pack had to battle early leader Jay Bailey to take the lead. Once he did he never gave it up. Fuqua would build big leads as the night went on, but yellow flags would pull the pack in, but each time the field would restart Fuqua would pull away and would finish with an easy win. “Everything just went right tonight,” Fuqua said. “This is a smooth quick track, and I built this car just for this type of track.” Rounding out the top 5 were Robert Shepard (2), Kerry Davis (3), Daniel Hilsabeck (4), and Jay Bailey (5).

For the 2nd straight week the White Line CDL Training B-Modified division feature wasn’t decided until the final turn of the night. Heath Murry led opened up a big lead early and led almost the whole race, but yellow flags, 3 in the final 3 laps, allowed Dustin Thulin to catch up. In the final restart of the night, Murry and Thulin would race side by side and would continue that way through the first 3 turns. On the final turn, with Thulin on the bottom and Murry on the top, Murry would drift higher allowing Thulin to make the pass and get his 1st win of the Season. Jake Richards (3), Jeremy Chambers (4), and Bryan Rigsby (5) rounding out the top 5.

The Casey’s General Stores Pure Stock division was the first Feature of the night and it had the first back to back winner of the season. Tyler Garst, who had been battling for 3rd and 4th for the early part of the race, got a lucky break after a restart when leader Darren Davenport lost oil pressure. While trying to get off the track Davenport held up Darrin Christy, 2nd place driver at the time, allowing Garst to take over the lead. Christy would battle his way back to 2nd, but could never over take Garst. Garst said, “This is a great start to the season! We won 4 times last year with this car, but we have a new car we are also still trying to figure out. We are going to stick with the old car for right now, but if we can get the new car going right we might make the move to it later on.”

In the Ferrellgas Stock Car division there was another repeat winner. Terry Schmidt had to make a lot of changes to his car going into the Feature race, the biggest of which was putting his drive shaft back after it came out at the end of his Heat race. Schmidt would over take Dustin Sievers, jumped out to an early lead, about half way through the race. The battle for 2nd through 5th, including Eric Weyer, Steve Herrick, Travis Tenpenny, and Zach Henery, allowed Schmidt to pull away for the repeat win of the season. “This was a smooth, quick track. I love this track, it’s the best track Heartland Park has ever had!” Schmidt said.  Tenpenny won the battle for 2nd, Herrick came in 3rd, Henery finished 4th, and Weyer rounded out the top 5.
