O'Neal Brings Family/Fun Together With Win

Topeka, KS - Racing is truly a family sport. Racers and fans came together on Saturday night to BriggsAuto.Com Speedway for great racing and a chance to celebrate Mother's Day early, but by the end of the night it was a father and a daughter that stole the show.

John O'Neal Jr. has been racing for years in the Midwest and has won countless races over that time. In recent years, O'Neal has stepped away from being a driver and moved on to other things such as raising a family.

Every now and then he gets an itch to get back behind the wheel. Saturday night was one of those nights as he competed in the Ferrellgas Stock Car division.

"We came out about 3 weeks ago as fans to spectate and watch," said O'Neal, "I told Jim (Conley) that I would love to bring the Factory Stock down here this looks like a fun track. Smooth, fast and dryslick. I love them dryslick. We knew early it (the track) was throwin up some dust and we knew early it was going to be one of those tracks and again. It brought back a lot of found memories of racing asphalt."

After a strong in his heat race O'Neal would start inside the 2nd row, but a lot of eyes were on the pole position. Terry Schmidt, last year's track champion and 2x feature winner in 2013, drew the front row starting spot.

As the green flag dropped O'Neal wasted no time. As Schmidt took the lead by the first corner, O'Neal would join Schmidt at the top spot as the two went side by side the flagstand. The two drivers would race that way on lap number two until Schmidt went high out of turn 4 and O'Neal took over the lead. Once in the lead it was all John O'Neal from that point on.

"I have thousands and thousands of laps on pavement tracks and I would say that gave me a little advantage over some of the guys," said O'Neal, "It's just a pleasure to drive. I am very competitive and I am just having fun right now. My main goal is to spend time with my family and taking my kid go kart racing. If I get to race this car again, this (BriggsAuto.Com

Speedway) is my new home. There is no reason to race anyplace else."

O'Neal would pick up his 1st win on his 1st visit to HPT, but it was a gesture in victory lane that showed why this sport it termed a family sport. As some racers do, they wait till their careers are not the most important thing, to wait and start a family. O'Neal was one of those guys.

After more than 300 wins, in victory lane John wanted to make sure that he was able to share the moment with his young daughter, Addison. She hadn't had the opportunity to feel the sensation of celebrating a win with her father. She does now.

Clint Hedge would hold on for the runner-up spot in the feature, 3rd went to Phil Snodgrass, Steve Herrick drove to a 4th place finish and Eric Weyer rounded out the top 5.

In the Casey's General Store Pure Stock main event it was a case of 'you just didn't see what you thought you did.'

Byron Glotzbach, in his 2nd year of racing, drove to the front of the pack in the feature event and in the end held off, a hard charging veteran, AJ Christian for his 1st win! Exciting, yes? Hold that thought.

After finishing a race it doesn't necessarily mean that you are done for the night. Once you finish a race you have to then go to a post-race tech inspection and after finishing that task you are given your finishing position. Saturday night, it's what fans didn't see that changed the outcome of the race and made the 3rd place finisher, Darrin Christy, the winner of the feature event.

In post race tech, it was declared that the 1st and 2nd place cars were hit with infractions that would change their finishing positions to 17th and 18th.

Christy, who has finished no worse than 2nd this season, picked up his 1st win and was very humble about being declared the victor.

"I hate it for those guys (Glotzbach & Christian) they run good and I wasn't going to catch them," said Christy, "I was just content to finish where I was and it is what it is. We will take it, but I would like to pass them and beat them and they run good but that's the way it goes."

It was another strong night for the Pure Stocks. The feature was filled with a lot of battles on the speedway, a lot of 2 and 3 wide racing and just a few yellow flags.

"I haven't been since '06 and I have been watching the guys in the class,"

said Christy after the win, "they are all good drivers and I wanted to be a part of it. I am here it's fun and I am really enjoying it."

Colton Miller would celebrate his best finish of the season in 2nd, after

4 straight feature wins, Tyler Garst, the points leader, would finish 3rd, 4th went to Scott Garcia and Ron Kohn would take 5th.

Darron Fuqua might be getting the impression that the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown Victory Lane is his own personal parking space at the end of each race.

Saturday night in the Washburn Tech Modified feature Fuqua blasted to his 3rd straight feature win. The 2x defending champion has now collected 19 wins in the past 3 years at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. Fuqua is getting a lot of results out of his new car.

"We built this new car over the winter and it just feels good," said Fuqua, "the more research and thought that I put in it, the more the car feels like it's a part of me. The wins feel good, but I am always thinking about what I could do to go faster."

As the checkered flag dropped on the feature Saturday night the other competitors in the class might be having those same thoughts as Fuqua.

Luke Driskell did his best to stay with Fuqua throughout the night. A former feature winner at HPT, Driskell looked strong as he drove to a 2nd place finish. Travis Smith, a newcomer from Parsons, had a good run in his first outing finishing 3rd. One of the most interesting battles on the speedway came from the 4th and 5th place drivers as they swapped spots several times on the night. Josh Everhart would hold off Kerry Davis to finish 4th and Davis would end up in 5th.

The White Line CDL Training B Mods had a wild night of racing. This division hosts the largest number of racers each night and they provide a lot of excitement. Saturday night was one of those nights where the yellow flag seemed to wave more than it should.

After 3 tries at getting the race started, it was Heath Murry that gained the early advantage in the main event. Murry would hold on to the top spot as Jeremy Chambers, Randal Schiffelbein Jr., Dustin Thulin and Jake Richards were breathing down his neck.

Several yellow flags and Murry would still maintain the top spot. It was the next yellow flag that Murry didn't want to see.

On the restart Murry would lead the field back as the green flag came back out. Heading into turn 2, Murry's car broke loose and cars were sent scrambling behind him. It would take Murry from the top spot to the last spot in the running order. Chambers would now inherit the lead on the track.

There would be a few more yellow flags before the race director dropped a green, white checkered finish on the feature. Chambers would hang on and drive to the win. Chambers became the 3rd different feature winner this season in the B Mods.

Thulin would finish in the runner-up position, 3rd went to Schiffelbein, Richards finished 4th and Dakota Foster nailed his first top 5 of the season in 5th.

Next week the racers of the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown will get a break, but they will be back in action on May 25th.
