Rob June didn't get off to a great start last Saturday in the E.T. Bracket Racing Series at Heartland Park Topeka, but the day ended with the Basehor, Kan. racer accepting the winner's trophy in the Pro class in his first start of the year.
"This is the first time the car's been out, the very first race,'' June said after the final round. "I just switched it over to alcohol and this is the first time out. Today was just going to be a test, but it turned out good.''
The day certainly didn't start that way.
"My first time trial I ran out of gas on the starting line,'' he said. "I didn't know alcohol was going to burn that fast. I thought the day was going to be pretty much shot.''
But June continued to gain momentum throughout the day, capping things with a win over Dustin Becker in the finals. June clocked a time of 9.894 seconds in the final round, at a speed of 129.16 miles per hour.
"The car ran consistent, very consistent, and the temperature stayed way down,'' June said. "I thought it would run a little bit faster but I've got some tuning to do. Overall, I'm happy.''
