Topeka, KS – After suffering several rain outs during the 2013 season it was a cool July night that welcomed racers and fans back to action at Heartland Park Topeka’s Dirt Track.

The temperature was well below the normal average and the racers decided to provide the heat for the fans in attendance.

Steven Bowers Jr. picked up his first victory in the Washburn Tech Modified division. It was a long dry spell for the young racer from Topeka. Bowers won the last race of the season in 2012, but had yet to find his way to victory lane for 2013.

Kerry Davis jumped to the early advantage in the Modified feature. Davis, like Bowers, had yet to win a race in 2013, looked like he was putting together a winning run on Saturday night. Davis started from the front row and held a sizable lead until Darron Fuqua, the points leader, erased the lead. The first yellow flag would bunch the field up and start the fireworks show.

On the restart Bowers moved quickly from 4th to 3rd on the grid. It was a 3 car shootout at the front between Davis, Fuqua and Bowers. Another yellow would bunch the speedsters up one more time.

As the green flag flew the action would grow more intense for the top spot. Fuqua made a deep run into turn three chasing down Davis. In doing so he made contact with the leader in the left rear and both cars spun to the inside of the track in front of the entire field. It handed the lead over to Bowers after it was all over with.

From the there it was the Bowers show. He wouldn’t be denied for his 1st win of the season. Bowers raced his way to the win and moved up to 2nd in the point standings with the victory.

Tad Davis would hold on for the runner-up finish, 3rd went to a strong running Josh Henery, Jared Rogers started 16th in the main and finished with a 4th and Dalton Kirk took home a 5th place finish.

In the White Line CDL Training B Mod division Heath Murry is getting to be known as the Buffalo Bills of the racing world. Several times this season, Murry, has battled at the front of the field only to see an opportunity to win wiped out on the last lap.

On Saturday night Murry would lead 14 3/4 of the feature event. This time it was Ethan Isaacs that dashed his hopes in the final corner taking home the win.

Isaacs, who started 4th in the feature, worked his way through traffic and ran down Murry during the feature. Lapped traffic started to get in the way. This provided Isaacs a prime opportunity to take the lead away from Murry, but a late race yellow would take the lapped traffic out of the equation.

On the restart Murry still maintained the lead. On the 13 lap, Isaacs pulled to the inside of Murry down the back stretch. Murry shut the door on the advancement and they sprinted to the white flag. Exiting turn two Murry would slip ever so slightly and the move that Isaacs pulled 1 lap before was there again. This time Isaacs put his car into the low line going into turn 3, in doing so it took away Murry’s line and sent him up the track. Isaacs would speed off to 3rd win this season.

Murry finished in 2nd, Dustin Thulin also celebrated a good run going from 7th to 3rd in the main, 4th was the points leader, Jake Richards and rounding out the top 5, filling in for John Grist, was Josh Everhart.

Byron Glotzbach isn’t suffering from any Sophomore slump in 2013.

Glotzbach broke into the Casey’s General Store Pure Stock division a year ago and he had a solid year. This season Glotzbach has broken through as the premier driver in the class. Saturday night Glotzbach worked his magic once again and took home his 4th feature win of the season.

‘Big’ Al Mattox had the early lead in the feature event, but it was Glotzbach that was pushing the leader in every corner of the track. Glotzbach would make the pass for the lead going into turn 3 and he never looked back from that point on.

Tyler Hinrichs would give everything he had to catch Glotzbach, but he would come up just short at the finish line as Glotzbach won by the length of his own hot rod.

Randy Kohn, who battled with Hinrichs for 2nd all night, finished 3rd in the main event, 4th was Robert Garst, who started 14th in the feature and rounding out the top 5 was last years Pure Stock track champ, Randal Schiffelbein Jr.

The Ferrellgas Stock Car feature was another 3 car battle for the win on Saturday night.

Zach Henery, Clint Hedge and Steve Herrick all gave the fans a great show.

Henery took the early lead from Dustin Sievers in the feature. As Henery took the lead, Herrick raced his way into 2nd and Hedge was being held up in traffic as he was trying to get to the front of the field.

Once Hedge joined the party up front he worked his way around the high side of Herrick to take away 2nd. Hedge wouldn’t stay there for long. Herrick worked his way back to the inside of Hedge and regained the 2nd spot as Hedge went up the track and brushed the wall. Herrick would have nothing but Henery in front of him from that moment on.

Lapped traffic would come into play during the last couple of laps during the feature, but it didn’t matter. Zach Henery would not be denied as he would go on to win his 3rd main event of the season.

Herrick would finish 2nd, Sievers would work his way around Hedge for 3rd and James King rounded out the top 5 after starting in 12th spot.

The Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown continues next Saturday night, Aug 3, for Meals on Wheels Night at the races.
