Topeka, KS – Saturday night at Heartland Park Topeka’s Dirt Track the impossible almost occurred, all new feature winners in every division. Unfortunately, Byron Glotzbach had to spoil the perfect plan, but by the end of the night there were still 3 new winners on the night.

Since opening night this year Jake Richards has been at the top of the standings in the White Line CDL Training B Mods. It should come as no surprise that Richards is there, but what should come as a surprise is that heading into Saturday night’s race he hasn’t won a feature all season. He can now mark that stat off his sheet as he roared to his 1st win on Saturday night.

Dustin Thulin took the early lead in the B Mod Feature. The 2x feature winner looked as if he might pick up win #3, but a late race yellow would bunch the field up one more time and deliver another dose of excitement to the crowd.

On the restart Thulin couldn’t get away from the hard charging Richards. Richards had finally won the battle for 2nd with Ethan Isaacs and set sail to put an assualt on the leader, Thulin.

Out of turn 4 Richards moved to the inside of Thulin and raced the leader side by side all the way back to turn 4 before gaining the upper hand. Once at the top spot Richards would not let go as he raced off to his 1st win of the season.

Thulin would hang on for the runner-up spot, Ethan Isaacs finished in the 3rd spot, after a week off due to illness Dave Samuels scored a 4th place finish and Brian Murphy started 20th in the A Main and drove all the way up to a 5th place finish.

One week ago Steven Bowers Jr. became the 5th different feature winner in the Washburn Tech Modified division. Saturday night, for the first time all season, the fans were treated to another new winner in just two weeks! Kerry Davis was able to win the war of attrition and pulled down his 1st feature win of the season as he joined the fraternity of feature winners in 2013.

Tad Davis, a young up and coming driver, would make a bold move on the opening lap to move from 4th to 1st. Davis threaded his modified in between two cars and then stormed past the 2nd and 1st place cars coming down the backstretch and shot to the lead. Tad Davis would hang on to the top spot through the first yellow, but would have to deal with Kerry Davis after the restart.

The battle between the two Tad and Kerry, who are unrelated, went back and forth lap after lap before Kerry Davis took over the top spot. The two would meet up again as lapped traffic would hinder Kerry’s progress and Tad would take over again at the top spot. Tad would open up a sizable lead as he was able to get through the traffic without problems. Unfortunately an untimely yellow caused by Steven Bowers Jr. would erase the advantage Tad Davis had built up and bunched the field back together. This would give Kerry Davis new life.

On the final restart Kerry would show the power and the finesse that has made him one of the top Modified drivers in the Midwest. Kerry stormed to the point and drove off to the checkered flag. After coming up short last week it was a strong win and a boost of confidence for the Parkville, MO. native. The win also moved Kerry back to 2nd in the point standings behind Darron Fuqua.

Fuqua would finish 2nd despite a multitude of problems his car suffered through numerous melees on the track, 3rd was Tad Davis, Tom Grist seemed to have issues with his motor all night long but still managed a 4th place finish and rounding out the top 5 was Jay Bailey.

It was a perfect night for Russ Moyer as got his 1st career win! Reed Bros. Racing Photos

If there was a feel good story of the night, it occurred in the Ferrellgas Stock Car main event.

Russ Moyer has only competed in a handful of events this season at HPT. Leading up to Saturday night, Moyer’s career had been void of one big goal, a feature win! Saturday night Moyer put together a veteran like run and picked up his 1st feature win of his racing career.

James King and Moyer would bring the field to the green flag and once the race got going it was all Moyer from there.

Moyer took the lead on the opening lap. Hitting his marks lap after lap he would extend the lead over the 2nd place car. Behind Moyer there were several drivers looking to take their chance at the leader. Gerald Wahwahsuck, Ken Garcia, King and Tyson Young were all trying to chip away at the leader but they had to contend with each other before getting that opportunity.

Young would win the battle and earn the right to challenge Moyer at the front. Young would work his way to the back bumper of Moyer and at one point even pulled up to door, but Young couldn’t get the job done.

A late race yellow would set up a green, white, checkered finish. It didn’t bother Moyer any. He was a man on a mission. Moyer’s dream night ended with him staying out in the lead on the restart and driving to the checkers.

Young finished 2nd, Zach Henery would drive from 8th to 3rd in the main, 4th went to Steve Herrick and Garcia hung on for a strong top 5 finish in 5th.

Byron Glotzbach was the only repeat winner on Saturday night at Heartland Park. Glotzbach is beginning to put his stamp on the 2013 season in the Casey’s General Store Pure Stock class.

Dylan McDonald took the early lead in the feature on Saturday night. He would hold the top spot as Glotzbach and David McDonald would battle right behind him. Glotzbach moved into the 2nd position, but David McDonald didn’t go far away either.

It would take Glotzbach a few laps to work his way into the lead around Dylan McDonald. In doing so he also brought AJ Christian with him to the front of the field. The top 2 drivers in the point standings would go toe-to-toe for the final few laps of the feature.

The drivers wouldn’t let the fans down as they would come to the checkered flag nose to tail with Glotzbach on top and Christian in 2nd. For Glotzbach it would be his 5th win of the season.

On the final lap Darren Davenport made a tricky move to take 3rd in the feature after starting 9th, Dylan McDonald finished 4th and David McDonald would finish out the top 5.

The Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown continues with it’s 14th race of the season next Saturday night, August 10.
