Spotlight on Speed - Brandon Mitchell

Super Showdown Series

For years, football stoked Brandon Mitchell's competitive fires.

These days dirt track racing does the same thing.in

"That's one thing I like about this,'' said Mitchell, a lifelong Topekan who races in the B Modified class. "You're on your own a little bit but it's competitive and you still get that feeling that I did when I was on the football field.

"(Racing) is an aggressive sport, I guess you would say, but you've got to be kind of passive-aggressive. This is a good compromise.''

Mitchell played football in both high school and college, but his racing roots go even deeper, with Mitchell's grandfather and father both involved in the sport.

"It's one of those things that it's in your blood,'' Mitchell said. "When I was 11 or 12 years old I started racing go-karts out at 45th and Adams and continued that basically until I got into high school and that's when I started playing football a lot more.

"After I got back from college my dad was driving for another guy and since my dad was racing I got back into it.''

Mithcell has seemingly found a home in the B Mod class, currently driving a car previously owned by one of the area's top racers.

"It's Billy Robison's car that he used to have,'' Mitchell said. "Three years ago I think he ran this car and we bought it from him. We have another car that I've previously been racing that my dad's going to run now.

"I started out in a Grand National, but once this class started going again we figured this was the place for us. The cost isn't as much as an A-Mod and it's easy to find parts.''
