After opening the 2009 racing season with two straight Hobby Stock victories, Dylan Whitehead had a tough decision to make.

He had to choose between attending his high school graduation or trying for a three-peat at Heartland Park.

"I wanted to go racing, but it didn't happen because mom said graduation was more important,'' Whitehead said. "I didn't think so."

Fortunately for Whitehead, missing one week of racing hasn't seemed to slow down his drive for his first track championship.

After winning Saturday night's 'A' main, Whitehead now holds a 44-point lead over Dan Canady.

"The surprising thing is I missed that race and am still ahead,'' Whitehead said. "That's just pure luck.''

Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, Whitehead is enjoying the points race.

"I am, especially after what happened last year,'' said Whitehead, who graduated from the quarter-midget and micro-midget ranks. "We didn't even actually get to race here the whole year last year.

"Grandpa's happy, I''m happy. I think he's pretty happy with my driving this year and I am, too. We're just trying to do the best we can and keep it at that."
