Double Dose Of Racing Sees Darron Fuqua Win Two Features in One Night
Topeka, KS - It was a night that was suppose to be a double dose of racing action at HPT.Com Speedway turned into a night that Darron Fuqua won't soon forget.
The previous week's main events in the Modifieds, Factory Stocks and the B Mods were postponed because of foul weather. That meant that those races would be run last night before the regular event scheduled for the BriggsAuto.Com Super Saturday Showdown Series.
Darron Fuqua knew that he had a fast race car. It wasn't until he picked up the win in the 2nd Modified feature that he realized just how fast it was.
In the early feature, Fuqua raced out to the lead and never looked back. At one point he carried a lead that stretched for 1/2 of the track. It was an impressive march to victory for the driver from Topeka, KS.
To earn the 2nd victory on the night, things were shaping up to be a lot harder for Fuqua. New drivers that weren't allowed to compete in the first feature were rested and ready to go.
Kerry Davis got the drop in the 2nd feature and looked to have Fuqua at bay. On one restart Fuqua would drop to the bottom of the track and sprinted by Davis to only see the yellow flag come out and wipe out his good fortune.
Moments later it would be Davis that saw his good fortune wiped out as he would slow on the back straight and come to a stop. This would hand Fuqua the lead. Once in the lead, Fuqua waged a battle with Cody Agler to the finish.
Fuqua built up a large lead in the late portion of the 2nd feature, but as he made his way through lapped traffic Agler began to trim away at this lead. When it seemed that Agler was about to make a move on Fuqua in lapped traffic, the yellow flag came out once again. On the restart the two went back and forth, but it was Fuqua reaching the checkered flag first. Agler would settle for 2nd.
In the Factory Stock division the early feature went to an excited Gerald Wahwahsuck.
This class has provided close racing action since opening night and the first feature would be no different.
Dave Samuels, the winner from opening night, looked to be on his way to another Factory Stock feature win. Samuels worked his way through the field and found himself out in front. With less than 5 laps remaining a flat tire would send Samuels out of the lead and off the track. It was a time for the 2nd place car of, Wahwahsuck to pull in his 1st feature win at HPT.Com Speedway.
Wahwahsuck took over the top spot. A battle late in the race with Steve Herrick to the finish line had the crowd on it's feet. Wahwahsuck would fend off Herrick and claim his first feature win of his career at HPT.Com Speedway.
In the second feature of the night, it was all Dave Samuels. The former Factory Stock Champion, Samuels atoned for his early problems in the night. He would dominate the 2nd feature for his 2nd win on the 2011 season.
Bryan Rigsby is a driver that has suffered some bad luck at times. In the B Mod makeup feature, Rigsby would not find any of that bad luck.
Twenty plus cars took to the speedway for the first race of the night. Out of the 20 cars, any of the competitors were capable of a win.
The feature went for 15 laps, but it was the last 3 laps there were the most exciting.
Rigsby, Tyler Frye and Dylan Whitehead would all 3 go toe-to-toe in the final laps.
Rigsby would feel the pressure on the inside lane from Frye, while on the outside it was Whitehead applying the pressure.
As the white flag went up in the air, Rigsby would hold off both competitors taking his 1st win of the season in the B Mod division.
In the 2nd B Mod A main it was a surprise winner standing in victory lane at the end of the evening, Mike Higley.
Higley was caught up in a multi-car wreck in the first feature. As Higley was carted off the speedway by the HPT tow truck, making it out for the 2nd feature was in question.
Higley put everyone's questions to rest as he weave his way through the traffic to overhaul the leader, Tyler Frye, on his way to the victory.
It was emotional ride for this competitor as he spoke to the crowd from victory lane.
The Pure Stock division was the only division to not have an extra race on the night. They were able to get there feature in a week ago.
In their feature race of the night, it was all Zach Henrey for the 2nd straight week.
Henrey dominated on his way to his 2nd consecutive win on the season.
