Fuqua Hits Trifecta, Kohn Picks Up Win #3, Grist Returns To Winner's Circle and Field Wins Close Race At HPT.Com Speedway
Topeka, KS. - For the past few weeks Darron Fuqua has dominated the headlines at HPT.Com Speedway. This week wasn't going to be any different as Fuqua won his 5th feature of the season and his 3rd in a row.
Fuqua started in the 8th position. It took a little time for Fuqua to get passed a few cars on the speedway.
Once Fuqua zeroed in on the leader, it was only a matter of time before he was running the leader door to door. Steven Bowers Jr., started on the pole, and maintained the early lead. As the laps clicked off Fuqua was able to get underneath Bowers coming out of turn4.
"I thought I was clear of him," said Fuqua, "He went in slid up into the middle and I went in to the bottom and I thought he tried to pinch the corner off and run into my right side."
At the front of the pack it wasn't time for Fuqua to relax. A couple of late race yellows made the night interesting.
"Yeah, a little bit," said Fuqua, "I was pretty confident with the bottom. I knew that if I hugged the bottom, I didn't think anyone could pass me in the middle, so I just tried to hang on to the bottom."
Kerry Davis would finish 2nd after starting 12th, former feature winner, Cody Agler, was 3rd, battling back to 4th was Josh Everhart and rounding out the top 5 was Kyle Covert.
Race night at HPT.Com Speedway has provided a lot of great action already this season. Saturday night's Factory Stock race was exciting. Matt Field drove into a pack of cars, but somehow he came out of everything unscathed.
"I tell you, I couldn't believe the bite I was getting off of turn two," said Field, "Steve Herrick and Gerald Wahwahsuck went down to avoid the lapped car and I just saw a hole and took it."
Field moved up a total of 6 cars from the start of the race. It was enough to land him in victory lane for the 2nd time this season.
The top 4 cars seemed to be nose to tail. On the last lap, last week's winner, Steve Herrick, gave it all he had. In the end, but it just wasn't enough. The close racing action excited the fans in attendance. Gerald Wahwahsuck was also their at the end of the race, but he too would come up short.
Dave Samuels finished in the 4th position on the night and James King finished out the top 5.
If the Factory Stock race wasn't exciting enough, the B Mods gave the fans a great race too.
Marty Grist can tell everyone what it's like to be a hero or a heel on Saturday night.
Grist was running in 1st place in his heat race and spun out all by himself Causing him to go back to alternative plan of action.
Grist would start up front in the feature and would over take the leader, before the halfway point. While Grist disposed of Bobby Penny, several other drivers made their way to the front to battle as well. One in particular hard charger was Mike HIgley.
Higley came on strong on a late race restart and it looked as if Higley was going to catch lightning in a battle for the 2nd straight week.
In the end it would be Marty Grist taking his 2nd win of the season.
Higley finished 2nd by half a car length, Dustin Thulin finished in the 3rd spot, Bobby Penny rolled to a 4th place finish and Dalton Kirk rounded out the top 5.
It was Randy Kohn finding success in the Pure Stock feature. Kohn has celebrated his 2nd year in racing by winning his 3rd Pure Stock win of the season and in the Midwest Outlaw Vintage Racing Association feature event it was Zack Simmons holding off Keith and Jack Simmons for the win.
