SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: MICKEY LOCKHART

It was probably inevitable that Mickey Lockhart ended up in drag racing.
“I grew up out at the race track,’’ said Lockhart, who competes in Heartland Park’s E.T. Bracket Racing Series. “My dad and mom would both go racing. Dad would pull his ’63 Fairlane with an old Ford truck and my mom would unhook the truck and race the truck and my dad would race the car and me and my brother would play under the bleachers.’’
Mickey is now on the track, while his father (Mike Lockhart), mother (Gail Spencer) and younger brother (Lee Lockhart) also continue to race.
Mickey Lockhart, who lives in Alma, made his racing debut in the early 2000s.
“I’ve always been real competitive,’’ Lockhart said. “I played football and I did a lot of competitive things. When I ran out of that, and couldn’t physically go out and play sports every day, racing feels that competitive need that a lot of people have.’’
Lockhart has been a participant in the E.T. Finals and won the Sportsman title in the 2010 NHRA Kansas State Championships.
He is currently 10th in points in the E.T. Bracket Series in the Sportsman division, with a victory to his credit.
“I won the second race this year,’’ he said. “My mom won the first one and I won the second one.’’
Lockhart, who is a sales consultant for Ed Bozarth Chevrolet, is around cars all the time but said that racing provides a release for him.
“It’s a stress release,’’ he said. “You don’t think about anything and you meet a lot of good people.’’
Like it was when he was growing up, racing continues to be a family affair for Lockhart.
Lockhart is planning to teach his wife to drag race and it’s probably only a matter of time before one or more of his four children join him in the sport.
“Our family goes (to the races), my wife brings treats,’’ Lockhart said. “My boy is dirt head to toe when he leaves that place. It’s his favorite place to be. Everything with him is a race car, just like when me and my little brother were young.’’
