SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: KEVIN LAWRENCE
Manhattan’s drag racing Lawrence brothers, Kevin and Kyle, are concentrating on racing closer to home in 2011 and have multiple trips to victory lane to show for it.
Kevin posted a win in Super Pro in the first Heartland Park E.T. Bracket Racing Series event of the season and was the runner-up at HPT on July 9th. He is currently second in points.
Kyle has won in Pro and Super Street already this season and made it to the semifinals in two classes on July 9th.
“It’s been going great,’’ said Kevin Lawrence, the younger brother by two years. “All three cars have been real consistent and managing to turn on win lights.’’
Kevin and Kyle have raced NHRA Division V events in recent seasons but have cut back their schedule this season as their dad, Randy, fights prostate cancer.
“This year we’re just staying close to home, running at Topeka and other local tracks and not really leaving the state,’’ Kevin said. “The last three years previous we did a lot of the NHRA stuff, chasing the Division and going to Minnesota, Denver and places like that.
“We’re taking a break from that this year and we’re staying close to home, around (dad).’’
Kyle said that it was Randy that got the brothers involved in racing, at an extremely young age.
“My dad (raced) for 30 years,’’ Kevin said. “My birthday’s July 2nd and I went to the track the next week so I’ve been going to the race track since I was a week old.
“I’ve been dragged all across the country when he was doing it and we grew into it.’’
