Sentimental Pure Stock Feature Win For Garst, Fuqua, Herrick & Thulin Also Find Winner's Circle At HPT.Com Speedway

Topeka, KS - Sometime people like to root for the under dog. Sometime they like to root for the sentimental favorite. Sometime they just want to feel good about something. No matter who you are after watching the Casey's General Store Pure Stock feature everyone should have been up cheering for the winner, Scott Garst.

Garst came out for the first time this season to compete at HPT.Com Speedway. It had been more than 15 years since he was behind the wheel driving a Modified. That wasn't really the story line tonight.

The story line was the fact that Garst was celebrating an anniversary that meant a little more than the win did. What, you mean that there is something more important to a racer than winning? How about living.

Just a year ago, Garst needed a heart transplant. Unlike some folks, he got one. Not only did he get a transplant, he recently got stint put in to help out with the new heart. Garst and his son, Tyler, thought it would be neat to celebrate his 1 year anniversary with the new heart by running Tyler's new Pure Stock.

"It was about one year ago tonight, around 11:30 p.m. I went in and got a heart transplant," said Garst, "I got out about 7 days later I went home and been trucking pretty good ever since. Two weeks I went and got a clog and had to get a stint put in two weeks ago Friday. I have been doing good and Tyler saw that I was doing good and he said can we get into Big Racing? So that's how it started."

After finishing the heat race in 2nd, Garst set his sights on the night's feature event. He would start inside the 2nd row and he knew that he had some competition, but the 10 time feature winner, Zac Henery was having problems.

"I knew we had a good setup in the car, Dave Samuels has been killing himself trying to help me," said Garst, "I just wish Mr. Henery was in their running, he is what the gauge is in this class. If you can run with him and you can beat him, then that means you can run with the King and you can beat the King, but since he wasn't out there at 100 percent, I will never know if I could beat the King."

After jumping out to the early lead, Garst built up a comfortable lead. A late race yellow bunched up the field and it erased any lead that Garst had. On this magical night, Garst wouldn't be denied as he held off a late race bid from Tyler Hinrichs to get the victory.

Hinrichs went from 9th to 2nd in the feature, 3rd went to AJ Christian, Randy Kohn finished in 4th and 5th was Steve Stewart.

The Washburn Tech Modified results are inconclusive at this time. It's a fact that Darron Fuqua reached the finish line 1st for the 9th time this season, but what the unknown variable in the equation is the teching procedure.

Carl Flower, tech official at HPT, took tire samples of the Modified cars. Until the results of this test are released later this week, it means that the results are still 'unofficial.'

The Modified features were marred by two large crashes. The first one happened on the opening lap collecting 9 cars, the 2nd incident happened a few laps later collecting another 6 to 8 cars.

Once everything got sorted out it was Fuqua that took to battling with the early leader, Tom Grist. It wasn't an easy task but Fuqua found the line that would take him into the lead. At the front of the field, Fuqua seems to be unstoppable. He would extend his lead and go on to win race number 9.

Although, none of the results will be official until the tire test comes back.

Tom Grist held on for 2nd, Brian Murphy finished in 3rd, 4th went to Jay Bailey and Darren Bennett, who was in the first yellow of the night, stormed all the way back to the front to finish 5th.

Steve Herrick held of a large field of Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stocks to win his 5th feature of the season.

It would add to Herrick's point lead in the division and it also marked another night where 20 plus Factory Stocks showed up to race. An ever exciting class, added more firepower with the new arrivals.

Finishing 2nd after starting 11th was Gerald Wahwahsuck, Cliff Hedges Jr. finished 3rd in his first trip to HPT, 4th was a hard-charging Dave Samuels and rounding out the top 5 was James King.

The White Line CDL Training B Mod A Main went to Dustin Thulin. It was Thulin's 2nd win of the season and it also put him back into the hunt for a points championship . Currently, Thulin is 66 points back of the leader, Dalton Kirk.

Thulin would get the lead early and just like in the classes before, there would be some big accidents that would affect many drivers. A few yellows would come out late in the race, setting up a dramatic finish.

As the green would fly late in the race contact between the #77 of Dylan Whitehead and #11 of Mike Higley would allow Thulin to run away from the field on the way to the win,

Higley finished 2nd, 3rd went to the rookie, Whitehead, 4th was Dalton Kirk and rounding out the top 5 was a hard charging Steven Goodman who started 15th in the main event.

The action continues next week for the BriggsAuto.Com Super Saturday Showdown Series Race #16!
