SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: TERI BOYD

When Topekan Teri Boyd decided she wanted to drag race, she jumped in with both feet.
“I just dropped straight down into the top of the pack,’’ said Boyd, who went from being a spectator to competing in the highly competitive Super Comp division several seasons ago.
“It was a lifelong dream to drive a Super Comp car. We go to the (NHRA) Nationals every year and watch the Super Comps run and I always said, “Man, I wish I could do that.’ My dad looked at me and said, “Just do it.’ ’’
Boyd, who competes in Heartland Park’s E.T. Bracket Racing Series, started her quest by attending drag racing school.
“I didn’t know if I could handle it so I went to Frank Hawley’s school (in 2007) and got my Super Comp license and it’s so thrilling I can’t even describe it,’’ Boyd said. “It was a million times more (than I thought it would be). The first time I hit the throttle at Frank’s I screamed so loud in my helmet.
“I was so unprepared for just the sheer power of the car. It was phenomenal. I wish I could put that in a bottle and have that again because what happens to you that first time and the first full pass that you make is very, very, very exciting.’’
Now in her third season of racing, Boyd currently sits 12th in HPT’s Super Pro standings.
“We are very competitive and this is the first year we’ve really gotten a lot of consistency,’’ Boyd said. “I’m pretty proud of myself that we can come out here, on a part-time basis, and run the bracket races and do as well as we have.’’
“We have done well and I’m very pleased. “It’s just been dream to me.’’
