SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: JOHN GRIST

John Grist is no stranger to Heartland Park Topeka, but he is still a relative newcomer when it comes to HPT’s Super Saturday Showdown Series.
“I’ve been coming to this track since it opened up but I’ve only been running this last year,’’ said Grist, who competes in the B Modified class.
John’s father Tom Grist and uncle Marty are both veteran dirt track racers and John followed their lead into the sport.
“I’ve been around it my whole life,’’ he said. “I ran about four races last year and have been running the whole year this year.’’
Grist, currently ninth in B Mod points, realizes he still has plenty to learn.
“I’m a newbie,’’ he said. “I’m having a blast. It’s a learning curve. I’m jumping into a class where there’s a bunch of experienced drivers and I’m running with them, so I’m having fun.
“There’s nothing like it.’’
So far Grist is pleased with the progress he’s made.
“At the beginning of this year I set goals for myself,’’ he said. “The first goal was just to finish. The second goal was to get in the top 10 and be a consistent top-10 finisher.
“The next goal was to be a consistent top-five finisher and I’ve been doing that so my next goal is to try to win one. That’s where I’m at now.’’
