Topekan Bill Chinn Jr. has nothing against dragsters, but he has a special place in his heart for door-slammers, including the 1997 Ford Mustang he’s been using of late in Heartland Park’s E.T. Bracket Racing Series.
“I’ve done both (kinds of cars),’’ said Chinn, currently among the point-leaders in HPT’s Super Pro division. “My buddies call me The Liquidator because I don’t keep cars very long.
“I’ve done real well in dragsters and I’ve run door cars.’’
Actually, Chinn has run both already this season.
“I started the season in the car Tom Williams is driving now, a 2007 dragster,’’ Chinn said. “I raced the first two bracket races in that car and then bought this car.’’
“I went to Great Bend and was runner-up in the Super Street race there and then I’ve raced the last (several) races with this car here.’’
If Chinn has a preference it’s probably the Mustang.
“The thing is, and I’m not going to say it rudely or knock the dragster, but it just doesn’t have the personality of a door car,’’ Chinn said. “A lot of people relate more to a ’97 Mustang or whatever.
“This one the electric windows work – headlights, tail lights. It’s just a pretty fast little street car.’’
The performance of both cars has Chinn put together a solid 2011 season thus far.
“So far it’s been not bad at all,’’ he said. “A little bit of luck goes a long ways but you just need to make rounds and this year I’ve been in late rounds.’’
