Justin Johnson Scores 1st Career Modified Win At HPT.Com Speedway

Topeka, KS - Sometimes when other things are going on around you, you can fly under the radar. HPt.Com Speedway was ushering in a new Race Director on Saturday night, Terry Wantland. This was the perfect opportunity for Justin Johnson to make something

Johnson made it a special moment at the end of the night by winning his 1st career Modified feature.

"I really don't know how I am feeling right now," said Johnson after the race, "I will have to tell you in the morning, I feel like I am dreaming right now."

It was a roller-coaster of a race for the young driver.

At the drop of the green flag it was Danny Barker that got the drop on the field, but he would give way to Grant Junghans. Junghans would hold onto the lead until Steven Bowers yanked it away from him.

Bowers, the winner from the week prior, looked to be well on his way to another win. As he came to the white flag, Bowers would lose his drive shaft. It would take him out of contention for the win. It opened up the door for a few other drivers.

Justin Johnson, Josh Everhart and Darron Fuqua all got a new lease on life as Bowers ran out of luck.

The field would complete a green, white, checkered finish. It took a couple of times, but once they got it right Johnson knew that it was time to go.

"I was shaking, didn't know what to do," said Johnson, "when I came to the white I was puttin', I didn't want to step on anything. When I came to the checkered I had my hand out the window and I won."

It was the 1st win for Johnson in a Modified after racing for 5 years.

Junghans had a strong run finishing 2nd, 3rd went to Josh Everhart, Darron Fuqua finished in 4th and rounding out the top 5 was Kerry Davis.

Mike Higley is riding a wave of good fortune right now. In the past two weeks he has picked off 2 wins and Saturday night he added win #3!

"It's awesome," said Higley, "We have had great seasons when I was racing asphalt in '06 and '07 and then when the first year of B Mods came out in the area in '08. Last year we tried to do the A Mod thing with Mike, we stayed together as a team, built a new car over the winter and we are all floating right now."

After last week, this week's race was a great event. At least it was for Higley. Higley started in the 5th position and it took him some time to get up to the front of the field.

Making your way through a 24 car field is tough. Sometimes you need to think about things before you stick your car in a place that might cause problems. Higley knows that all too well. Patience took him to the front tonight.

"The track was amazing," said Higley, "I think we inverted 5th and it took me some time to get to the front but when I did I found the line I wanted and from there it was 'Go' time."

HIs win also edged him closer to the points lead. Dalton Kirk maintained the lead leaving the track Saturday night, but with only a few races left Higley has now closed the gap to just a mere 8 points.

Kirk finished 2nd, Bryan Rigsby had a strong run going from 13th to 3rd, 4th was Dustin Thulin and rookie, Dylan Whitehead, marched from 14th to 5th in the A Main.

Just like in the B Mod division, two racers are setting the stage for a great points battle in the Factory Stock division, Dave Samuels and Steve Herrick.

Herrick has been the points leader for most of the season and Samuels has been playing catch up. After 3 straight wins and 5 out of the last 6 races in the win column, Samuels has now cut the points lead to 12.

Samuels, for yet another week, put his car anywhere he wanted to to make up time. He went high, low and middle on speedway. The high line seems to be his favorite groove. On the double file restart early in the race Samuels was stuck in the 2nd row on the outside. Exactly where he wanted to be. He used momentum and power to run to the front of the feature.

Jeff Miller finished in the 2nd spot, 3rd went to the points lead, Herrick, 4th was Zach Henery, who drove from 15th to 4th and Gerald Wahwahsuck finished in 5th after starting the race in the 16th spot.

In the Pure Stock division it was the season's hottest driver, Zach Henery, getting win #13 on the year.

Henery didn't start up front. Tyler Hinrichs had the top spot. Hinrichs started to feel pressure from the high groove on the track and he didn't know whether to hold his own line or move up the track to block. He chose to move up a little on the track and that was more than enough room for Henery to take the better position and get to the front of the feature.

Darren Davenport would put a run on Henery, but he would run out of time. It was his 2nd straight week of coming in 2nd on the track. Third went to Jimmy Millard, driving a new car, Randy Kohn finished 4th and 5th was AJ Christian.

HPT.Com Speedway and the BriggsAuto.Com Super Saturday Showdown Series racers will have a break next week. The NHRA Div. 5 race will be running at Heartland on the drag strip, so they are giving the dirt track the week off.
