SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: STEVE HART

Steve Hart is finally getting a chance to drag race, something he's wanted to do for as long as he can remember.

"I actually just started this year, but my dad used to race a long time ago, back in the '70s and early '80s, so I grew up around it,'' said Hart, currently sixth in Street points in Heartland Park's E.T. Bracket Racing Series. "I've just never had the chance to do it.''

Hart, who drives a 1988 Ranger truck, made his drag racing debut at the end of the 2010 season.

"I raced the last race of last season, when I got the truck finally finished, and this is actually my first full season,'' Hart said.

So far bracket racing has been everything Hart thought it would be.

"Even going to the (NHRA) Nationals for me it was always going to see all my dad's friends who raced.'' Hart said. "I used to always go hang out with the sportsman people.''

Hart's start in racing mirrors the same start his late father, John, had in the sport many years ago.

"My dad when he first started he started in Street,'' Hart said. "He bought the car for the family but drove down to Lawrence to race when it was open and then drove home. That's pretty much what I'm doing, the same footsteps as he did.''

Hart has yet to visit the winner's circle but is happy with the progress he's making.

"It's all a learning process,'' he said. "You've got to crawl before you walk. You never lost a race sitting there watching TV. The real thing is totally different, but it's fun.

"I'm not worried if I win. If I win something I win something. If not, no big deal.''
