SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: TODD PIPER

After finishing second in Super Pro points the past two seasons, Wamego drag racer Todd Piper is in position to claim his first Heartland Park championship this season.
But with four races remaining and holding a 72-point lead over Landon Stallbaumer, Piper knows that there’s still work to be done.
“I’ve just got to be consistent and am hoping to win another race,’’ Piper said.
Piper has posted three wins at HPT this season but said that going rounds is the key.
“The first round’s big, too, because you can lose a lot of points by not getting those points and having to buy back. It can be a pretty big swing.
“As long as you’re going rounds you’re happy.’’
Now in his fourth year in Super Pro, Piper is pleased with the progress he’s made, but knows that he can still improve.
“There’s always something to figure out about racing,’’ he said. You’ll never know everything, you just learn as you go. That’s the mentality you have to have.’’
Piper has a good mentor to learn from, with his father, Larry, one of the area’s most successful racers. Larry Piper was the Super Pro winner in the most recent race at HPT and sits third in points.
“I try to listen to everything he says,’’ Todd said. “He’s obviously been pretty successful.’’
