Lyndon's Jay Bailey got a late start in dirt track racing, but in just a few seasons has made the jump to the highly-competitive Modified division in Heartland Park's Super Saturday Showdown Series.

"The first car I owned was a Hobby Stock and that was four years ago,'' Bailey said. "I didn't start racing until I was over 40.''

Eventually Bailey moved up to B Mods and, after a successful run in that division, made the decision to move up to Modifieds.

"After doing (B Mods) the last couple of years I told everybody, "There's not much more I can do in B Mods. I've either got to move up or do something.' The competition is what drives me and as soon as I made that comment they said, "Well, here's where some cars are.'

"The next thing I knew I bought an A Mod and was ready to go A Mod racing.''

Obviously there was a learning curve involved, but Bailey is pleased with how the year has gone.

"When we first started out this season I felt like a fish out of water,'' he said. "But it just takes time. This car is a totally different beast than those B Mods were.

"It's taken us a little while to get used to it but I think it's all coming together and makes me look forward to next season for sure.''

Bailey is currently sitting seventh in Modified points and coming off a fourth-place feature finish last week.

"I enjoy the heck out of it and, more importantly, my family does, too,'' Bailey said. "My kids and my wife, they don't miss a race. They're pretty much there every weekend.''

With the 2011 season winding down, Bailey is already getting ready for 2012. He's already made a lot of changes to this car and has more in mind.

"We're ready to go,'' he said. "We'll change the body and we'll come up with something very unique for everybody next year.''
