SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: Paul Mustain
Topeka racer Paul Mustain has been a star in the Pro Bike class in Heartland Park Topeka’s E.T. Bracket Racing Series, but in many cases the division has amounted to Mustain and a select few drivers, sometimes Mustain by himself.
And even though he knows he could be contributing to the end of his own dominance, Mustain is doing his best to drum up more competition.
“The bike class used to be a great bike class and now we’re trying to rebuild it,’’ said Mustain, the defending Pro Bike track champion.
Mustain has been second in points to Stuart Miles much of the 2012 season but Mustain is coming off back-to-back victories earlier this month.
Now Mustain is not only focused on winning but on getting more competitors out to HPT.
“We’re getting a few more bikes in the program,’’ he said. “I know a lot of times on the Friday night test-n-tune there’s quite a few bikes out here. We just can’t get them to come out here and do bracket racing.
“With Kansas City we’re trying to get some of that contingent to come over since they shut (KCIR) down. I just think it’s going to take time.’’
Heartland Park’s bracket series is back in action Saturday and Sunday, with the Thunder in the Heartland Division V Championships coming up on Aug. 24-25.
