Herrick Rebounds to Take Factory Stock Win at HPT
Herrick Rebounds to Take Factory Stock Win at HPT

Topeka, KS – Fans enjoyed another great evening at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway
at Heartland Park Topeka. A total of 95 cars checked in to battle it out
for the 17th race of the season. The weather was wonderful and the racing
was just as exciting as it has been all season long.
Steve Herrick has participated in a wild experience over the last month.
Herrick has had a tough time this season. You wouldn’t think that by
seeing that he had 1 victory coming into Saturday night’s races and he was
also sitting 3rd in the points. Four weeks ago he would get a fine and
suspension by track officials at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway. He quietly did
his time and came back one week ago. It seems the time off might have
helped this driver. Herrick notched his 2nd win of the season last night
in the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Factory Stock divsion.
It wouldn’t be an easy win for Herrick. He had to wrestle the lead away
from Matt Field on a restart. Several yellow flags hampered the flow of
this main event. A couple of more yellows would come out during the
feature while Herrick was in the lead. It would not matter to Herrick.
Herrick put his foot down and drove away from the competition on both
restarts. He would roll easily into victory lane.
In victory lane Herrick thanked his sponsors and fans for hanging with him
over the season as he received a thunderous applause from the crowd.
Zach Henery made the big move of the night going from 9th to 2nd, 3rd went
to Eric Weyer, 4th was the points leader in the division, Terry Schmidt
and rounding out the top 5 would be Matt Field.
In the Washburn Tech Modified division Kerry Davis scored his 3rd victory
of the season.
Starting on the pole position Davis made it look easy in the A Main as he
wired the field from flag to flag.
The feature got off to a rough start as several yellows flew inside the
first 5 laps of the race. Once the race got going the drivers put on
another great show for the fans.
Davis started out with a 2nd place finish in the 3rd heat race of the
night, but with a lucky child in the stands pulling out the number 4 ball
from the bucket Davis would start on the pole position with the first four
rows being inverted for the feature.
At the start of the race Davis showed that he had the car to beat as he
took to the early lead and extended his lead lap after lap.
Justin Johnson would give Davis a challenge on a restart, but it wouldn’t
last as Johnson would lose a piece of skirting off his car and would have
to go to the rear of the field. Another late race yellow presented another
battle as Jake Richards decided to make a move with only 5 laps remaining.
As Richards and Davis came out of turn 4 with 3 to go, Richards would pull
alongside the leader. The fans rose to their feet in anticipation of a
tight finish.
The tight finish would not happen as Richards would slip in the 1st turn
on the white flag lap. It gave Davis the chance to sprint away from
Richards and notch win #3 on the season.
Richards held on for 2nd, Steven Bowers Jr. kept his streak of top 5s
going with a 3rd place finish, Papa Smurf, Jay Bailey, went from 18th to
4th in the main and newcomer, Tad Davis rounded out the top 5.
Mike Higley might have 5 wins to his credit in the White Line CDL Training
B Mod division, but the Isaac brothers, Ethan and Lucas, have 5 wins
combined and they are currently 1 and 2 in the point standings. Ethan, the
points leader, drove to his 2nd win of the season on Saturday night and
padded his position at the top of the standings.
It was just a few weeks ago when Brian Murphy and Ethan Isaacs put on an
exhibition of excellence in the feature. Fans were wondering if it was
going to happen again as the two were paired up on the front row of the
main event. The front two would go side by side for a few laps, until
Isaacs drove to the top spot and would not look back on the way to winning
feature #2.
In just his 1st full season of competition at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway
Ethan is enjoying a solid run. A run that could land him the 2012 track
championship, if things continue on this current path. If it wasn’t for a
slow start to 2012, fans could have been witnessing a sibling battle for
the points championship, but Lucas said that it took him a little to get
things sorted out before running strong in the 2nd half of the season.
The feature event almost went without incident. A yellow flag just before
the halfway point put an end to the notion of the perfect feature.
Murphy, who has rebounded lately, drove to the runner-up spot, 3rd went to
Higley, 4th was Terry Bivins and Bryan Rigsby finished in the 5 spot of
the main event.
It was the same story from a week ago in the Casey’s General Store Pure
Stock main event.
Randal Schiffelbein Jr. starts in or around the 3rd row, drives to the
front and takes the lead and speeds off to win #9. It didn’t happen that
easily.
It was Darren Davenport, winner of 2 features in 2012, getting out to the
early lead. Davenport sped out to the lead and clicked off some smooth
laps that kept him at the front of the field.
Jesse Shotts and Schiffelbein continued to wage their personal war against
one another behind Davenport. The two drivers would close in on the
leader, but would swap some paint as they looked to one up the other. As
the laps clicked off Davenport maintained the lead and Shotts and
Schiffelbein maintained their battle.
After a couple of restarts, Schiffelbein would make his move on the leader
Davenport. The two would go side by side around the speedway with Shotts
also sneaking in there making it 3 wide for the top 3 spots. Davenport
would get the best of this short challenge as he would retake the lead.
During a late race restart, the battle of the two winning-est drivers in
the division continued, this time as Shotts & Schiffelbein would make
contact and Shotts would get the short end of the stick as he had to be
towed from the racing surface. This allowed Schiffelbein to focus on
Davenport.
When the race went green again, the two front runners went side by side
once again. This time it would be a reversal of fortune as Schiffelbein
would take the lead from Davenport and drive off to win #9 on the season.
Davenport finished in 2nd, 3rd went to AJ Christian, Tyler Hinrichs raced
his way to a 4th place finish and rookie, Byron Glotzbach, celebrated
another top5 finish in 5th.
The drivers of the Super Saturday Showdown Series get a break next week as
the ‘Thunder in The Heartland’ NHRA Div 5 Drag Race takes over at
Heartland Park Topeka. The next scheduled race at BriggsAuto.Com Speedway
will be on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012.
