SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: DAVID SAMUELS
Tecumseh's David Samuels knew that moving up to the B Mod class last season in Heartland Park Topeka's Saturday Showdown dirt track series would be a challenge.
But Samuels, who won back-to-back championships in the Stock class, fared well in his first season in the division, finishing sixth in points.
Now he's off and running in 2013, winning last Saturday's season-opening feature, his first feature win in the B Mod.
“I feel a whole lot more comfortable (this year),'' Samuels said. “I really found some key issues in the car and myself over the winter.
“I learned a whole lot of things last year about what not to do. This thing's a whole different animal and I had to get used to all of that. For about the first seven weeks, every week was about like the first week, until I got more comfortable with how the chassis reacts different than the old taxi-cab I was driving. I think the car was there a lot of nights, where I wasn't.''
Having said that, Samuels felt pretty good about his season points finish.
“I was OK with it,'' he said. “You always want to do better. Every racer wants to do better, but I was just glad that at the end of the year I still had an engine, I still had a race car and I still had my health.
“Sixth wasn't bad, but we're definitely shooting for a lot higher than that.''
And although he said he's still learning in his No. 72 B Mod, Samuels is happy he made the move.
"I think I've done all I could have done in the Stock Car class,'' Samuels said. "I was very, very pleased to take the step up.''
