SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: Randal Schiffelbein Jr.

SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: Randal Schiffelbein Jr.

Before last season's impressive Pure Stock championship run was even complete, Tecumseh's Randal Schiffelbein Jr. had started preparations to take his next step in Heartland Park Topeka's Saturday Showdown dirt track series.

Schiffelbein bought a B Mod and tested it out in competition late last year before moving up to full-time status in the class this season.

"It was just getting seat time (late last season) and getting used to a B Mod,'' Schiffelbein said. "We found out the car wasn't right when we raced it at the end of last year and changed everything and now it's a totally different new car so we're learning all over again.''

Schiffelbein dominated the Pure Stock division most of last season and said that experience helped him get ready for his move up this season.

"Driving-wise they're totally different cars so it didn't really help a whole lot, but getting used to being in a dirt car and learning re-starts, cautions and knowing what to do, it was great for that,'' Schiffelbein said. "And it was great just to get in the seat of something and learn it.''

After his early success in Pure Stock, Schiffelbein moved up his timetable for the move to B Mods.

"The original plan was to run the Pure Stock for two years and then eventually hope to get a B Mod,'' he said. "Well, we went out and won nine times and won a championship so we decided just to move up right then and there.

"There was nothing more that we could gain by going back to the Pure Stock class for another year.''

Schiffelbein is currently seventh in the B Mod standings and said he's enjoying his new class.

"Driving this car is completely different so you've got to learn that but you want a challenge,'' he said.

Week four of the Saturday Showdown Series is on tap Saturday. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 7 o'clock.

Former Seaman athlete Tyler Garst, second to Schiffelbein in the 2012 Pure Stock standings, has won all three Pure Stock features to take a commanding lead in the point standings in that division.

Other points leaders include Jake Richards in B Mod, Terry Schmidt in Factory Stock and Kerry Davis in Modified.
