SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: Dean Steward

SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: DEAN STEWARD
Local drag racer Dean Steward has been a fixture at Heartland Park Topeka since the facility opened in 1989.
Now 76 years old, Steward sees no reason to quit now.
Steward, who competes in the Pro class in HPT's E.T. Bracket Racing Series, admitted there's been times in recent years when he debated whether it was time to walk away from racing.
But this past off-season Steward never considered that possibility and was itching to get when the season started this spring.
"I was ready to go,'' said Steward, a cancer survivor. "My health is good, so why not? The cancer has stayed in remission and (this spring) they ran me on a treadmill and I came out with flying colors there.''
Steward placed 12th in the Pro standings in 2012 and said he will continue to race as long as he's healthy and competitive on the track.
"I've still got the competitive spirit,'' Steward said. "I've had a couple of days (this season) where I didn't do very well, but I've still got a couple of things I'm working on that I think will help.''
In addition to his racing, Steward has also been working on another car-related project that has been keeping him busy.
"I wrote a book and it's how to understand the high-performance engine,'' said Steward, who has been around cars most of his life. "I've got a lot of people to thank for things I've learned through the years and (the book's) been a lot of fun.''
