Topeka, KS – Jeremy Chambers doesn’t race all the time at Heartland Park Topeka. He should think about it though, because his chances are pretty good at running up front. Saturday night he logged his 13th feature win of the season in his B Mod and it was his 2nd at HPT.

Heading into the White Line CDL Training B Mod A Main, Chambers went through a tonof trouble before getting ready to race. It was a last minute decision to race at HPT, he had to change a gear once he got there and in doing so Chambers missed the draw for his heat race and had to start at the back. It didn’t take him long to get going as he went from worst to first in the 4th heat race of the night. Two rows were to be inverted for the feature and that put Chambers on the outside front row with last week’s winner, Jake Richards.

Richards got the drop on Chambers in the A Main as he got to the early lead. A series of yellow flags would hinder the race, but once it got going it was entertaining and exciting.

Chamber ran Richards down and the two would battle side-by-side. Each time Chambers would mount a challenge Richards would pull back into the lead. The two headed into turn one and Chambers, finally, had the run he had been looking for. The two would make contact. Chambers took the lead as they exited turn 2 and came to the white flag on the following lap. He would hold on to notch his 2nd win of the season at HPT, but it was his 13th win of the season overall.

Richards would finish 2nd and extended his points lead in the division, 3rd went to Dustin Thulin, 4th was Heath Murry and RJ Edwards rounded out the top 5.

Robert Garst got a late start to the season in the Casey’s General Store Pure Stock class. Even though he got started late, it hasn’t hurt his production. Garst raced his way to his 1st win during the 11th race of the season and just 3 races later he has found his way back to victory lane.

Garst got off to a slow start in his heat race by finishing 4th, but a lucky fan in the crowd picked out a number 4 ball for the a main lineup and that meant that Garst would start on the front row. All cylinders were firing for Garst as he blasted to the the lead on lap number 1 and put the hammer down the rest of the way. He would lead wire to wire in the feature and never got challenged.

Byron Glotzbach, who came into the night the winner of 4 of the last 5 races, would finish in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Colton Miller who celebrated his best finish of the season, AJ Christian rolled to another top 5 finish in 4th and Darren Davenport held on to finish 5th in the a main.

It was a couple of years ago that Steve Herrick entered the last few races of the season with the lead in the point standings only to see it go away as Dave Samuels would win the championship. It’s a fact that has been motivating Herrick in his racing career. After Saturday night only 6 races remain before the season comes to an end and, once again, Herrick finds himself at the top of the standings. Unlike 2 years ago, Herrick decided to help his own cause Saturday night by getting his 4th win of the season in the Ferrellgas Stock Car A Main.

Herrick entered the night only 20 points ahead of Zach Henery. When the night ended Herrick had extended the lead to 28 points. Herrick accomplished this feat by picking up a heat race win and winning the main event.

Ken Garcia took off as the early leader in the feature, but it wasn’t long before Herrick moved from his 3rd place starting position to the front of the pack. At the front he remained until the end of the race. As Herrick took the lead the only action he would see were the lapped cars that would get in his way.

Henery drove his way to a runner-up finish after some hard luck in his heat race. Henery started the feature outside the 5th row and made a strong run to finish 2nd. The battle between Herrick and Henery will continue on till the finish and it should be exciting.

James King logged a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Ronnie Moore and celebrating his best finish of the season was Craig Springer in 5th!

The final race of the night was the Washburn Tech Modified A Main.

Points leader, Darron Fuqua, decided to take the night off from racing at HPT and this left the 2nd and 3rd place drivers in the points, Kerry Davis and Steven Bowers Jr., a prime opportunity to make up some ground on Fuqua.

One week ago Jake Richards took his 1st win of 2013 in the B Mod division, tonight it looked as if he would visit victory lane once again, this time in the Modified class. Richards got off to a great start and would hold the lead for the first 10 laps. It wasn’t easy getting out and holding onto the lead, because Steven Bowers Jr. was hawking Richards the entire time.

Bowers had the faster car on this night and he wasn’t wanting to force the issue searching for the lead. Moving up high on the track, Bowers would power his way around Richards and move into the lead. At the front of the pack, the racing action stayed green and Bowers was gone. The win was Bowers 2nd in the last 3 weeks. A sign that he is getting things figured out.

The racing behind Bowers was interesting. Kerry Davis rolled through the competition late to pick up a runner-up finish. Davis started outside the 4th row in the feature and was hung up in traffic for a few laps. Once he got going he moved past Richards and Tad Davis to take over the 2nd spot. He would knock the points lead to Fuqua down to just 18 points with 6 races to go.

Richards would finish in the 3rd spot, 4th went to Tad Davis, who continues to run strong, and rounding out the top 5 was Luke Driskell.

The 15th race of the Super 8 at Forbes Landing Saturday Showdown continues next Saturday night, August 18. For more information visit Heartland Park Topeka’s official website at www.hpt.com.
